Over the past 20 years, nine of the last 10 world record 100m dash times were posted by Jamaican or United States sprinters.

In the 200m dash, it’s eight of 10, with the US behind six of those fastest times, but the two fastest ever were by Jamaicans. Clearly, the question must be asked – which country is the greater sprinting super power?

Historically, you could argue that year after year, raking in medal after medal, the U.S. has a strong case for being the best. Factor in some of the longest-standing sprinting records posted by Michael Johnson, and the continued success of young, up-and-coming athletes and sprinting veterans, and it’s hard to argue against the US.

On the other hand, the fastest times ever – except in the 400m dash – have all been posted by Jamaicans. No humans have run faster in the 200m dash than Yohan Blake or Usain Bolt, and no one has even come close to Bolt in the 100. Throw in the scorching performances by the Jamaican relay teams over the last few years and there’s no question – today, Jamaica is without doubt the world’s fastest country.

The debate is bound to continue through the 2012 Summer Games, and perhaps new surprises, upsets, or unprecedented victories will make the matchup all the more interesting. No one can deny that both countries have dominated the sprinting world for much of recent history, but in the end, which do you think has a stronger sprinting heritage?
